A History of Sacred Heart Communities in Collaboration (SHCC)

In 1992, Fr. Tom Garvey, SCJ, began to explore the idea of bringing together religious communities which share an historical connection with the spirituality of the Sacred Heart as he had seen done by Superiors General of Sacred Heart communities in Rome. He sensed that there could be a variety of ways to collaborate. In the Spring of 1992, he raised the idea at a gathering of major superiors in Greensboro, NC. With their encouragement, he formed an initial steering committee composed of Tom Garvey (Priest of the Sacred Heart), Natalie Runfola (Religious of the Sacred Heart), Mark McDonald (Missionary of the Sacred Heart), and Joan McGlinchey (Missionary Sister of the Sacred Heart -- Cabrini Sister).

In 1995 and 1996, groups attending the LCWR and CMSM assemblies advised the steering committee to move ahead and plan for a national conference. The first national Sacred Heart Conference was held in 1995 at Cabrini College in Radnor, PA. Over twenty different congregations participated in a rich variety of workshops, lectures and liturgies. A second conference was held in 1997 at Loyola University in Chicago, IL. A third conference was held in June, 2001, in Cherry Hill, NJ. The fourth conference was held from July 24-27, 2003 at the Milford Jesuit Spirituality Center in Milford, OH (outside Cincinnati, OH). The 2005 Conference was held at the Espousal Center in Waltham, MA in July of 2005. The 2008 Conference was held in July at the Bon Secours Spiritual Center in Marriottsville, MD.

The current steering committee is composed of Roland Ouellette (Brother of the Sacred Heart), Julia Walsh (Sister of the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of Jesus), Bernadette Casciano (Sister of the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart - Cabrini), and Andrew Torma (Priest of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart). In addition to coordinating the planning for the 2010 conference, the steering committee is continuing the tradition of annual meetings of contact persons from participating groups. These meetings provide an opportunity for input into the conference planning process, grass roots networking and sharing in-between the large conferences.

Where has the SHCC been and where is it going?

The SHCC has worked and will continue to work in the following areas:

COMMUNIO: We have shared various activities and approaches to prayer, institutional mission integration, spiritual development of the laity and religious, and programs and personnel for retreats. In getting acquainted with other Sacred Heart communities, we have discovered some common elements:

          * French School

          * Ignatian roots

          * Missionary dimension

          * Eucharist

          * Internationality/Multiculturalism

MISSIO: We have developed a common mission by:

          * giving input to the steering committee to shape conference activities

          * planning the national conference

          * sharing responsibilities for the conference

VISION STATEMENT

We, the Members of the Sacred Heart Communities in Collaboration, joined in the common cause of striving for the coming of the reign of God's love on earth, commit ourselves to foster action in the following areas:

Charism, Spirituality and Theology

- to develop a common SHCC mission statement

- to stress who we are and what we are about as a way to renew our consecrated life

- to share contemporary insights on the vows and the evangelical dimension of our lives

- to identify and articulate the core elements of a common spirituality

- to develop a common language and meanings for these core values

- to emphasize the fundamental elements of God's love expressed in the Heart of Jesus

- to renew the theological understanding of reparation in today's fractured world

Internal Education and Formation

- to continue to foster the participation of our membership and collaborators and others interested in the goals of the SHCC

- to develop contents and programs for common sharing and mutual training of our novices and others in formation communities

- to continue to sponsor biennial National Conferences on Spirituality of the Heart for today

Community Life and Mission

- to promote intercongregational community living

- to develop a joint approach for evangelization through the sharing of charism and spirituality resources

- to organize and foster small, joint projects and initiatives among two or more participating communities

- to collaborate in preparing and offering parish missions, retreats and conferences

Governance and Structures

- to ensure effectiveness in the cooperation among the major superiors and the steering committee by adopting suitable articles of collaboration

- to provide adequate support in personnel and finance, through contributions and fund-raising projects (endowments, grants)

Resources and Means

- to create a jointly-backed visible name and center for resources and library (ad experimentum for three years: 1998-2001)

- to organize and promote regional workshops led by intercongregational teams to "replicate" the experience of the contact-persons' meetings

- to foster local meetings among SHCC member communities

- to seek ways and means to share resources in the field of health care and retirement

- to develop and maintain a common web site to permit the exchange of news, educational resources (programs, books, bibliographies, rules of life, hymns, prayers, videos, tapes), justice and peace concerns, retreats and speakers, open listings of available positions, hospitality needs, etc.

ARTICLES OF COLLABORATION

(Approved, Fall, 1997)

1. SACRED HEART COMMUNITIES IN COLLABORATION, founded in the Fall of 1992, is an organization of religious communities of men and women dedicated to the Sacred Heart and who share a common spirituality of the Heart.

2. The purpose of this organization is to facilitate communication and collaboration among Sacred Heart communities in the line of our common spirituality and to help share that spirituality with the Church and society.

3. Sacred Heart Communities in Collaboration (SHCC) is an organization of communities in which each participating community has its own autonomy.

4. Any religious community listed in the National Catholic Directory may become a member of the SHCC by communicating this desire to the Steering Committee.

5. The principal activity of the SHCC is to host Conferences (national or regional) on the Sacred Heart for members of participating communities and lay people associated with them. Additional collaboration, whether in the line of spirituality, community or ministry, is also possible and will be decided upon by the major superiors of the participating communities.

6. The governing body of the SHCC is made up of the major superiors (or their delegates) of all the participating communities. Only they can make changes in these Articles of Collaboration or make major decisions for the association. Normally, they will meet once a year.

7. The business of the SHCC is entrusted to a Steering Committee of four members (two women and two men) chosen from among the participating communities by the major superiors. Any Steering Committee member who is not in a leadership position in his or her community will be in regular contact with community leadership about the activities of the SHCC.

8. The Steering Committee may hire an Executive Secretary for day-to-day business should this seem useful.

9. To insure on-going dialogue and collaboration among participating communities and to facilitate the preparation of the National Conferences, a meeting of contact persons (one from each community) will be held each year. Any contact person who is not in a leadership position in his or her community will be in regular contact with community leadership about the activities of the SHCC. If a contact person is unable to attend the annual meeting, the community will appoint a substitute to attend that meeting.

10. Each participating community will pay an annual membership fee to the SHCC. This fee will be determined by the major superiors at their annual meeting.
