El 31
de diciembre

among Hispanics of Mexican heritage, the last day
of the civic calendar year, December 31,
is observed as a day of thanksgiving to god for all his graces during the past
year and to implore his blessings in the new year. On this day, the entire
family goes together to church including those members who have not
participated in Sunday Eucharistic liturgy or in any other religious function
in church throughout the year. All together are present for a prolonged visit
to the blessed sacrament and to mary
without any specific prayers or rituals. After this religious practice, the
extended family may enjoy a feastday dinner and good
conversation at home.
